What’s On in Edinburgh this August


There are so many brilliant events happening in Edinburgh this month...


MUSIC. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo
Now – Saturday, 25 August

The Capital's annual military extravaganza, featuring a unique blend of music, dance, drama and pageantry set against the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.





FAIR. The West End Craft, Art and Design Fair, Princes Street
Now – Sunday 26, August, 11am – 6pm daily

The makers, designers and artists are selling only what they themselves have produced.

Standards are high and there's plenty of originality and diversity on display.

There are 100 to 120 exhibitors every day with new faces on Mondays.

MARKET. Flea Pitt Market, Sibbald Walk
Tuesdays to Sundays, 11am -5pm until Sunday 26, August

Live music, street food and artisan traders at this free market by ‘The Pitt’ and ‘The Food and Flea Market’.

Stalls include: Ròst Eats, Barnacles & Bones, The Peruvian, CuBao Box, Lost Bothy, MOO PIE Gelato, StoogeBurger and PittSteak.

Party beverages are provided by Barney’s Beer, Smith and Gertrude, The Cocktail Kitchen and Mr Sippys Taptails.

FESTIVAL. Edinburgh International Festival, various venues
Now – Monday 27, August

Bringing world-class arts to the capital since 1947, the EIF sets the standard for classical concerts, opera, dance and theatre, with performers from around the world.

A highlight is their ‘Light on the Shore with Edinburgh Gin Seaside’ music events which take place at Leith Theatre throughout August. Scottish artists such as Mogwai, King Creosote, Julie Fowlis, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Django Django and Karine Polwart will perform.

FESTIVAL. Edinburgh International Book Festival, Charlotte Square
Now – Monday 27, August

Each summer Charlotte Square Gardens is transformed into a tented village for the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

This three-week celebration of the written word is the largest of its kind in the world and offers something for all ages and interests.

FESTIVAL Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2018
Now – Monday, 27 August

Whether you prefer comedy, music or theatre – you’ll find a performance you enjoy at the world’s biggest arts festival.

The festival boasts more than 50,000 performances across 400+ venues and lasts for three weeks in August until Monday the 27th.

FOOD. Whisky and Cheese tasting, Whiski Rooms
Now – Tuesday, 28 August

Whisky and cheese – if you've never tried them together, consider the possibilities of a peaty single malt meeting a briny barrel-aged feta.

Try out different combinations in this tasting session as four single malt whiskies are paired with four different cheeses sourced from a local cheese monger. The fully hosted tasting covers production, maturation and bottling process.

SPORT/FITNESS. Swim and Gym, Edinburgh Leisure Clubs
Now – Friday 31, August

Edinburgh Leisure is offering non-members the opportunity to try out their facilities with a free 7-Day Pass. 

The offer runs until 31 August 2018. During this time customers can pick up a pass online via the Edinburgh Leisure website or in participating venues, giving them seven days unlimited consecutive free access to gyms, swimming pools (including their saunas and Turkish baths) and classes, subject to class space*.

ART. Jenny Saville Exhibition, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
Now – Sunday 16, September

The instalment features a major survey of works by renowned British artist Jenny Saville, spanning some 25 years of the artist’s career across five rooms.

Bringing together 17 works from private and public collections across the globe, this will be the first museum exhibition of Saville’s work ever to be held in Scotland, and only her third in the UK.

The selection spans 26 years, from iconic early paintings such as Propped (1992) and Trace (1993-4), to recent charcoal and pastel drawings, demonstrating how Saville’s approach to depicting the human body has shifted over the course of her career.

EXHIBITION. Art of Glass, National Museum of Scotland
Now – Sunday, 16 September

Presented in partnership with The National Centre for Craft & Design, the free exhibition examines the diverse work of established and emerging glass artists working in Britain today.

Explore how they are embracing the medium of glass in new and exciting ways, pushing the boundaries of techniques and challenging the perception of glass as merely a material for creating functional objects.

Featuring a selection of fifteen works, Art of Glass reveals a snapshot of glass art today, made by fifteen artists including Matt Durran, Harry Morgan and Emma Woffenden.

ART. Rembrandt: Britain’s Discovery of the Master, Scottish National Gallery
Now – Sunday 14, October

This exhibition showcases major works by the Dutch Master alongside those of the many British artists he inspired, such as William Hogarth, Joshua Reynolds, Henry Raeburn, David Wilkie, Jacob Epstein, John Bellany, and Frank Auerbach.

Highlights of the show include key paintings by Rembrandt drawn from British collections, such as Belshazzar’s Feast from the National Gallery in London and Girl at the Window from Dulwich Picture Gallery. It includes star paintings now overseas, such as The Mill from the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.

EXHIBITION. Rip It Up: The Story of Scottish Pop, National Museum of Scotland
Now – Sunday, 25 November

A musical journey of Scottish pop music from the 1950’s to the present day.

Artists and bands featured include Lonnie Donegan, Gerry Rafferty, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Lulu, The Rezillos, Midge Ure, Simple Minds, The Skids, Big Country, Garbage, Franz Ferdinand, Young Fathers, and many more.

The exhibition includes original stage outfits and instruments, many loaned by the artists themselves, plus memorabilia, props, film and, of course, music.

MUSIC. The Wanted Session, Leith Depot
Weekly on Tuesdays at 9pm. Tuesday 21 and Tuesday 28, August

Weekly open music sessions hosted by Andy Mckay and Baz Simpson. Leith Depot describe: ‘All outlaws, musicians, poets, and story tellers are welcome.’ Their event listing also reads: ‘bring instruments, bring ears and come and get sessioned!’

FESTIVAL. Edinburgh International Television Festival, various venues
Wednesday 22 – Friday 24, August

An essential fixture for everyone in the television industry wanting inspiration, networking, learning and fun.

Run by and for the television industry, it is attended by over 2000 delegates and has featured hundreds of globally renowned top TV executives as speakers.

THEATRE. Home, King’s Theatre
Wednesday 22 – Sunday 26, August

An entire house is built on stage with fixtures, fittings, and finally inhabitants until it is transformed into a home in this production.

Actor, creator, magician and illusionist Geoff Sobelle won enormous praise for previous shows Flesh and Blood and Fish and Fowl in 2010, and The Object Lesson in 2014.

This new show, co-commissioned by the International Festival, is described by Capital Theatres as a ‘breath-taking spectacle of illusion, choreography, inexplicable construction and live documentary’.

Sobelle explores how a home shapes the lives of those within it – from the humdrum rituals of showering, cooking and doing the washing, to the momentous events of births, deaths, even crazy parties.

MUSIC. The Candidates – Summer Soul Sensation, Leith Dockers Club Ltd
Friday, 24 August, 7.30pm – 11.30pm

The Candidates return to the Leith Dockers Club for an evening of summer soul, disco and dance floor filler favourites.

The Edinburgh-based 7-piece band are dedicated to playing good, old fashioned soul classics with influences including The Contours, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye and The Marvelettes.

MUSIC. The Sorries, The Magnum Bar and Restaurant
Friday 24, August at 10pm

Celebrating 10 successful years at the Fringe and a host of sold-out shows, the kilted duo returns with more selections from the much-loved Scottish songbook.

Inspired by a love of The Corries, Douglas Kay and Martin Philip sing, they play and banter their way through an entertaining night of traditional Scottish and comic songs.

FILM. Uncanny Valley, Edinburgh Filmhouse
Fortnightly on Fridays. Friday 24, August, 11.15pm

The Filmhouse describes their Uncanny Valley screenings as ‘a place for dreams as well as nightmares. The hope here is to shine a lantern on the nocturnal neo-classics lurking in the shadows.’

This Friday, they are showing ‘Night of the Creeps’ – Fred Dekker’s 80’s science fiction, cult classic. It’s set in 1959, when an alien experiment crashes to earth and infects a fraternity member. Two geeks pledging a fraternity accidentally thaw the corpse, which infects the campus with parasites that transform them into killer zombies.

EXHIBITION/FASHION SHOW. From Shanghai with Love, Playfair Library, Old College
Friday 24 and Saturday 25, August

The exhibition features Shanghai style Qipao from the 1910s-1930s – when Shanghai was known as the Paris of the East.

Their runway will feature contemporary and futuristic Qipao designs using the latest high-tech materials and techniques, combining tradition with modernity.

COMEDY. The Secret Policeman’s Podcast, Edinburgh Playhouse
Friday 24 and Saturday 25, August

The Secret Policeman’s Podcast brings comics together to raise awareness and funds for Amnesty International.

The shows will highlight their ‘Families Together’ campaign, which calls on the UK government to change the restrictive rules keeping refugees in the UK apart from those they love. They will also feature the case of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, imprisoned in Iran after an unfair trial and separated from her husband and young daughter.

The line-up for the August instalment features crowd favourite Patrick Topping, Nick Checketts and acid. It’s complete with Hot Creations favourite Richy Ahmed, plus Ejeca and other special guests.

EVENT. Festival Fireworks Concert
Monday 27, August, 9.30pm – 10.15pm

This annual firework display at Edinburgh Castle marks the end of the Festival Fringe.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra provide an accompaniment to the display. A ticket is required to hear them playing at Princes Street Gardens.

However, some choose to tune into Forth 1 to hear the live broadcast. For alternative viewing, many spectators use the following spots: Calton Hill, Ross Theatre, Castle Street, Inverleith Park, Edinburgh Castle and residential rooftops in the New Town.

August 22: The Spy Who Dumped Me - A US action comedy in which two best friends are drawn into a conspiracy after one of them discovers her ex-boyfriend is a spy. Director: Susanna Fogel. Starring: Mila Kunis, Sam Heughan, Kate McKinnon.

August 24: Alpha - A drama set 20,000 years ago in which a young man embarks on a journey for survival. Director: Albert Hughes Starring: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Johannes Haukur Johannesson.

BlacKKKlansman - A historical drama based on a true story in which an African American cop runs an undercover investigation into the Ku Klux Klan. Director: Spike Lee. Starring: John David Washington, Adam Driver, Topher Grace, Laura Harrier.

Yardie - Set in '70s Kingston and '80s Hackney, Yardie centres on the life of a young Jamaican man named D, who has never fully recovered from the murder, committed during his childhood, of his older brother.
