Restaurant Review - The Basement: Spice up your day the Mexican way

Our blogger Sarah Colston visited The Basement to give you the lowdown on this popular bar and restaurant.

‘Without chillies the indigenous people did not think they were eating,’ recorded Spanish historian and traveller Bishop Bartolome de las Casas in the 16th century during a spell in Mexico.

Four centuries later the heavily spiced cuisine of Mexico is now so popular that the natives believe that their national identity would be at a loss without chillies.

The Basement Bar and Restaurant, on Broughton Street, with their traditional Mexican food, shares the passion with Edinburghers and tourists alike.

Tacos, fajitas, chilli dishes and tortillas – in keeping with Mexican tradition are all there and the spicy sauces and salsas, with hot chillies at their heart leave a lasting impression.

The broccoli, chickpea and sesame fajitas., served on a skillet with onions and peppers. With flour tortillas, cheese, sour cream, salsa and guacamole.

This is an establishment that has been around a long time. Indeed, one of our party visited over a decade ago and was quick to note that the ambience, staff and food was still high end of the scale.

The Basement cleverly marries the dining customers and drinking only clientele in a relatively small space. This is a difficult trick to pull off but the bustle and general bonhomie on view suggests that years of practise have paid off. Both sets of visitors can, of course, indulge in superb cocktails and Tequila if they wish.

Homes in Mexico are characterised by a warm and colourful décor, and whilst the lighting in this location is perhaps darker, the interior elements are full of intricate details which reflect this culture.

Some early customers at the restaurant area.

Wired orange lights exuberantly wrapped around a display of plants sweeps across the back wall and is especially effective. Colourful cushions, lanterns, spotlights and chairs abound – all adding to the buzz of the venue and its hip vibes.

The nachos with jalapenos, Monterrey jack cheese, tomato sauce, avocado and their signature lime and coriander cream.

The Basement Bar and Restaurant is a hot place to visit and deserves a toast, perhaps with a Mexican Tequila – jalapeno infused!
