Snap Review - The Favourite

Have you ever wanted to find out a little bit about a new film to get an indication of whether you’ll like it or not, and ended up reading the entire story? We have. That is why our snap reviews are designed specifically to help you decide if it’s one to watch without giving everything away.

Perfect performances by Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone make this strange and naughty period drama one to watch.

The film now leads the Bafta Film nominations 2019 and has put Director Yorgos Lanthimos - whose previous, and similarly unconventional, films include The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Lobster - in the running for best director.

It’s set in early 18th century England and tells the story of Queen Anne (Olivia Colman), and the rivalry between her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) and her newly appointed lady of the chamber, Abigail Hill (Emma Stone).

Queen Anne struggles with physical and mental health issues and feels insecure in her position as England’s ruler, thus relying on Lady Sarah for advice. Colman, who has already scooped ‘Best Actress’ at the Golden Globes for her role, excels in her portrayal of this Queen Anne.  The character is overweight and depressed, allowing Lady Sarah to prey on her vulnerabilities. Their close and intimate relationship provides scenes full of sharp-witted conversation.

Lady Sarah takes pity on her impoverished cousin Abigail and offers her a job as a servant at the palace. Sensing an opportunity, Abigail competes with Lady Sarah for a place as the Queen’s preferred companion. The drama is loosely based on the true story of Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, competing with Abigail for the monarch’s favours.

The screen is dominated by the trio of female stars and the parts of the male leads are intentionally diminished. Sarah’s husband, the Duke of Marlborough (Mark Gatiss), alongside Tory Robert Harley (Nicholas Hoult), represent the political male of the period. The males are dressed to look foolish in flamboyant costumes, faces whitened with make-up and flouncy wigs. They are easily manipulated by the females including Harley’s friend Samuel Masham (Joe Alwyn) who is played along by Abigail after he develops an infatuation for her.

The script, in general, is unlike other period dramas where the characters talk in an impeccable form of English far removed from modern speech. Their dialogue is often offensive and they use swearing and sarcasm to voice their views.

While male dominance is more often portrayed in historical dramas, The Favourite has tipped the balance of power to allow the women control. A quite fitting story line in the modern day where women are challenging inequality and demanding fairness and recognition. With praise for the performances of all three of the lead actresses, Lanthimos’ reluctance to follow the norm in this dark comedy has royally paid off.

Today, however, he is virtually unknown.

ART EXHIBITION. Artist Rooms: Louise Bourgeois, Kettle’s Yard
Now – Sunday, 24th, March

The free exhibition of work by Louise Bourgeois at Kettle’s Yard includes sculptures, prints and drawings, reflecting different periods in Bourgeois’ life. All works are drawn from the Artist Rooms collection.

Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010) was born in Paris and lived and worked in New York from 1938. She is widely recognised as one of the most important figures of modern and contemporary art. Often biographical, Bourgeois’ work explores themes including childhood, family, motherhood and gender identity.

She engaged with existentialism and surrealism as a young artist in Paris – where she was also mentored by Joan Miró – and moved to New York in 1938. The importance of her work was not fully recognised until the 1970s, when her career was reinvigorated by a new generation of women artists.

Her wide-ranging art, encompassed painting, sculpture, installation and printmaking, exploring themes including childhood, family, motherhood and gender identity.

Featured are early clockwork machines, a modern recreation of renowned British robot Eric, and stars of the silver screen including a T-800 endoskeleton used in the movie Terminator Salvation and a replica of Maria from the iconic 1927 film Metropolis.

Tickets are £10 for adults, £8 for concessions and free for children under 16. Visit: https://www.nms.ac.uk/national-museum-of-scotland/whats-on/robots/.

ART EXHIBITION. Andy Warhol and Eduardo Paolozzi | I want to be a machine, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
Now – Sunday, 2nd, June

This free exhibition takes its theme from a much-quoted remark by Andy Warhol: “I want to be a machine”. Behind Warhol’s seemingly facetious quip was the serious belief that art would become increasingly mechanised.

This exhibition examines Warhol’s and Paolozzi’s work, showing how they captured images from photography and advertisements. Warhol traced his images while Paolozzi used collage, until they both turned to screen-printing in the early 1960s to transform photographs into prints.

It includes rarely seen drawings by Warhol from the 1950s, as well as his famous multi-coloured prints of Marilyn Monroe and a group of recently acquired ‘stitched’ photographs. Works by Paolozzi include some of his early proto-Pop collages from the early 1950s and his kaleidoscopically-coloured prints from the 60s and 70s.

MUSIC. The Gorms, Whiski Bar and Restaurant
Mondays and Fridays, 10pm – 12.30am

Snap Review - Instant Family

Have you ever wanted to find out a little bit about a new film to get an indication of whether you’ll like it or not, and ended up reading the entire story? We have. That is why our snap reviews are designed specifically to help you decide if it’s one to watch without giving everything away.

Sean Anders' heart-warming American comedy-drama starring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne as first-time foster parents.

4 Stars – Very Good

Instant Family is about a married couple, Pete (Mark Wahlberg) and Ellie (Rose Byrne) who, feeling a void in their lives, consider becoming adoptive parents.

They visit a foster care centre, where they are met by a comedic duo of social workers Karen (Octavia Spencer) and Sharon (Tig Notaro) who guide the parents-to-be through the process. Key to the film’s success is the script which is full of quips between Pete and Ellie that are particularly funny during sessions with others looking to adopt – from same-sex couples to single people to couples unable to conceive. The film exemplifies the varied mix of people who might like to adopt and all the reasons that could lead them to that point, whilst sharing a sense of what life might be like for someone who doesn’t have a family.

Director and co-writer Sean Anders used his own personal experiences as a foster father as the inspiration behind this sweet drama. He and his wife went from having no children to having three and his compassion shines through in the story. Although the film accentuates the joy, laughter and love involved in adoption, it also shares some tragedy and challenges – for example problems when children have experienced trauma or difficult situations.

The couple must attend a fair where they can interact with children to see which they might like to adopt. This is where the film does well to show how issues such as how prospective foster parents are less inclined to adopt teenagers. Pete convinces his more hesitant wife to approach the teenagers where they meet Lizzie (Isabela Moner) and find what Pete lightly describes as a ‘cosmic connection’.

Mark Wahlberg has previously worked with the director in his ‘Daddy’s Home’ films and with actress Rose Byrne in ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’. In the role as Pete, Wahlberg plays a sweet and caring husband and father and he empathetically conveys all the emotions experienced on the journey to making a family. Rose Byrne, as Ellie, delivers an equally impressive performance. She allows the audience to relate to their quest to be accepted as foster-parents and the ups and downs involved in their endeavour to create a family unit that works for everyone involved.

Instant Family is filled with both weepy and humorous moments between characters which are effective in capturing some of the complexities of real-life adoption and the strength of the bonds that can be created. It gives viewers a better understanding of some of the positive aspects of adoption in a way that could potentially encourage others to become a family for someone.
