FESTIVAL. TradFest, Various venues
Now – Sunday, May 6

This year’s folk arts extravaganza will continue to explore the rich heritage of Scottish music with pub sessions, folk gigs and piping displays in venues around Edinburgh.
A highlight of the festival includes the ‘Battle of the Folk Bands’ on Sunday, May 6, at Pleasance Theatre where five bands compete.
Or, why not try some ceilidh dancing at ‘The Robert Fish Band: Celta Ceilidh’ at The Counting House from 8pm on Friday, May 4. The event description warns: ‘expect wild turns of song and drama!’

THEATRE. War Horse, Festival Theatre
Now – Saturday, May 12

Based on the beloved novel by Michael Morpurgo, War Horse has become a popular theatrical event.
It uses life-size puppet horses by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company to tell the story of Joey - a horse purchased by the Army for service in WW1, France and the attempts of young Albert, his previous owner, to bring him safely home.
The Sunday Express described the show as ‘an extraordinary piece of theatre, absolutely guaranteed to move the heart.’

MUSIC. The Illegal Eagles, Edinburgh Playhouse
Saturday, May 5

The tribute band have been touring for more than two decades and their longevity is due to their mastery of the Eagles’ distinctive sound.
Their repertoire includes  the songs ‘Hotel California’, ‘Take it to the Limit’, ‘Life in the Fast Lane’, ‘Take It Easy’, ‘Lyin’ Eyes’ and ‘Desperado’.
NME described the show as having ‘amazing musicianship and vocals’.

MARKET. Pitt Street Food Market, 125 Pitt Street, Leith
Saturday, May 5, 12, 19 and 26

This weekly street food market offers a vibrant array of food and live music.
Drinks such as craft beer, wine and cocktails are available too.
The event lasts from noon until 10pm. Entry costs £2 and is free for children who are welcome until 8pm. Dogs are also allowed.
On May 5, is their ‘Edinburgh Craft Beer Festival Taster Sesh’ where they have teamed up with the Edinburgh Craft Beer Festival and Barney’s Beer to give visitors a preview of what’s to come at the beer festival later this month. Their event on May 12, ‘Electric Fields Warm-up Party with Sneaky Pete’s Vibes' is an ‘Electric Fields festival taster to get visitors in the mood of Summer and excited about the outdoor festival at Drumlanrig Castle in Dumfries.

THEATRE. Birdsong, King’s Theatre
Tuesday, 8 – Saturday, May 12

The stage show, based on Sebastian Faulk’s novel, is a story of love and courage that takes place in France before and during the Great War.
Englishman Stephen Wraysford embarks on a dangerous affair with the beautiful Isabelle Azaire, turning their worlds upside down. As war breaks out over the idyll of his former life, Stephen must lead his men through the carnage of the Battle of the Somme and the sprawling tunnels that lie deep underground.
In a review The Times described the show: “Moving, gripping dramatically electrifying and outstanding”.

THEATRE. Wicked, Edinburgh Playhouse
Tuesday, May 8 – Saturday, June 9

Wicked, tells the story, written by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, of an unlikely but profound friendship between two young women who first meet as sorcery students.
Directed by Joe Mantello, the musical acts as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, and transports the audience to a re-imagined world of Oz.
The Bristol Post said of their show this year at the Bristol Hippodrome: “You could be in a Broadway theatre! Wicked is one of the best touring productions ever to come to the city.”

FAIR. The Grange Fair, Newington
Saturday, May 12

A VARIETY of stalls, refreshments and musical entertainment has been organised as part of Newington Library’s community event.
Stalls at The Grange Fair will sell items such as jewellery, books and glassware. There will also be children’s activities include a bouncy castle and face painting.
It will take place from 1 – 4.30pm at Newington Library and along Fountainhall Road.

SOCIAL. Eurovision Song Contest at Akva Bar, Fountainbridge
Saturday, May 12

The Eurovision Song Contest, hosted in Lisbon this year, will be shown on a big screen at Akva Bar.
There will be competitions with score boards and prizes and Eurovision Bingo. Guests are encouraged to dress up to support a favourite country. Tickets are £15 from https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/eurovision-2018-at-akva-tickets-43026664913?aff=es2 – and include a drink on arrival.

MUSIC. Thriller Live, Edinburgh Festival Theatre
Monday, 14 – Saturday, May 19

This celebration of Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5 features top hits from pop to rock, and soul to disco.
Songs include: ‘I Want You Back’, ‘ABC’, ‘Can You Feel It’, ‘Off The Wall’, ‘The Way You Make Me Feel’, ‘Smooth Criminal’, ‘Beat It’, ‘Billie Jean’, ‘They Don’t Care About Us’, ‘Dangerous’ and ‘Thriller’.
The Evening Standard: ‘you can’t beat it!’ and What’s On Stage described the show as ‘a total blast’.

MUSIC. The Johnny Cash Roadshow, Usher Hall
Thursday, May 16

The tribute is fronted by respected singer and songwriter Clive John who with The Spirit Band recreate what it was like to be at a real Johnny Cash show.
It also features Jill Schoonjans as June Carter and covers all aspects of Cash’s life.
The Grand Opera House York notes that the show is ‘overwhelmingly a hit’.
Hits include ‘Ring of Fire’ and ‘Walk the Line’, as well as the Johnny and June duets including ‘Jackson’.
Their performances are accompanied by a video back drop with images and shots from Johnny Cash’s life.

EXHIBITION. Tim Peake’s Spacecraft, National Museum of Scotland
Thursday May 17 – Saturday, August 4

Astronaut Tim Peake’s Soyuz spacecraft will be free to explore at The National Museum of Scotland's Hawthorden Court.
The capsule will be displayed alongside a virtual reality adventure called ‘Space Descent VR’ which places visitors at the heart of Time Peake’s journey back to Earth. It is available for ages 13+ for £5. All visits must be booked in advance and the spacecraft is free of charge.

FESTIVAL: Whisky Stramash
Saturday 19 and Sunday May, 20

Sample hundreds of whiskies from Scotland and abroad at Surgeon’s Hall on Nicolson Street.

FESTIVAL: Hidden Door Festival, Old Leith Theatre
May 25 – June 3

The event offers 10 days and nights of music, theatre, visual art, film, dance, spoken word and late-night DJs.
It has been organised by Hidden Door - a non-profit arts organisation that is volunteer run. They aim to reopen urban spaces as a platform for new and emerging artists and creatives.
Last year they received praise for their role in resurrecting the old Leith Theatre.
The Times described last year’s festival as ‘a riot of noise and colour’.

FESTIVAL. Edinburgh Craft Beer Festival, The Biscuit Factory

Friday 25 – Sunday, May 27



The craft beer gathering returns with breweries from around the world, street food and live music.

More than 35 breweries from Scandinavia, mainland Europe and the USA, as well as Scotland and the UK will be on hand to pour beers and tell stories behind their brews.

Music includes Mogwai, Two Door Cinema Club, Metronomy and Don Letts. The Pitt street food market will provide eats.

SPORT: Edinburgh Marathon Festival
Saturday 26 and Sunday, May 27

A running festival for all ages with seven races to choose from including the marathon, half marathon, team relay, 10k, 5k and short junior races.
The marathon takes place on the Sunday, and spectators can come along to cheer on the runners at points throughout the race and at the finish line at Pinkie Playing Fields in Musselburgh.

A food market with a flea market will take place on Sibbald Walk, New Street from 11am to 5pm.
There will be a rotating cast of street vendors and trucks at the event organised by The Pitt.
Expect food, drink, market stalls and entertainment.
