FILM. Uncanny Valley, Edinburgh Filmhouse

Fortnightly on Fridays. Friday 7, 10.50pm and Friday 21, 11.05pm, September

The Filmhouse describes their Uncanny Valley screenings as ‘a place for dreams as well as nightmares’. Their aim is to ‘shine a lantern on the nocturnal neo-classics lurking in the shadows.’

On Friday 7, is The Endless, released this year. Having escaped the UFO death-cult they were raised in, brothers Justin (Benson) and Aaron (Moorhead) receive a message via VHS from the group they thought long-dead. Returning, they discover there is much more to the cult’s beliefs than they first thought.

On Friday 21, they are showing ‘Dredd’ – Pete Travis’ action sci-fi that failed to lock down the box office on release, yet obtained a loyal cult following almost overnight. Mega-City One - a sprawling, crime-ridden metropolis. The Judges are all that stand against the millions of lawbreakers in the war for control. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is assigned rookie Anderson (Olivia Thelby). Together they face off against crime boss, Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) who exercises full command of her colossal tower block.

FILM. Ocean Film Festival, Festival Theatre

Saturday 15, September

The Ocean Film Festival’s UK tour will screen more than two hours of educational and entertaining films related to the ocean from independent film makers from across the globe.

It includes a unique selection of films of varying lengths and styles covering topics such as the oceanic environment, marine creatures, ocean related sports, coastal cultures and ocean lovers.

​Screening begins at 7.30pm with a 15-minute interval at 9pm and finishes at around 10.30pm. The tour was introduced by Ocean Film Festival Australia to inspire viewers to explore, respect, enjoy and protect our oceans.

EVENT. The Edinburgh riding of the Marches, The Royal Mile
Sunday 16, September

Taking its roots from the historical Common Ridings of Scotland, 280 horses will traverse the ancient Royal Mile. This cavalcade is a re-enactment of the return of the Captain of the Trained Band (responsible for keeping order within the City) to Edinburgh with the tragic news of defeat at the Battle of Flodden, 1513.

Every year, following a morning of high-energy gallops through some of Edinburgh’s countryside to re-enact the riding of the boundaries of the City, the Captain and Lass will lead the horses up Edinburgh’s Royal Mile towards the Mercat Cross. Crowds more than 20,000 line the Royal Mile from midday onwards, awaiting the arrival of the Cavalcade. Accompanied by several pipe bands and led by the Lord Provost.

FITNESS. Edinburgh Kilt Walk, Holyrood Park
Sunday 16, September

Taking in all the sights that the Capital has to offer the Kiltwalk in Edinburgh is a unique way to see the city.

There is a new Kiltwalk Edinburgh route and three walk routes of different distances - The Mighty Stride, Big Stroll and Wee Wander.

ART. Jenny Saville Exhibition, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art
Now – Sunday 16, September

The instalment features a major survey of works by renowned British artist Jenny Saville, spanning some 25 years of the artist’s career across five rooms.

Bringing together 17 works from private and public collections across the globe, this will be the first museum exhibition of Saville’s work ever to be held in Scotland, and only her third in the UK.

The selection spans 26 years, from iconic early paintings such as Propped (1992) and Trace (1993-4), to recent charcoal and pastel drawings, demonstrating how Saville’s approach to depicting the human body has shifted over the course of her career.

EXHIBITION. Art of Glass, National Museum of Scotland
Now – Sunday, 16 September

Presented in partnership with The National Centre for Craft & Design, the free exhibition examines the diverse work of established and emerging glass artists working in Britain today.

Explore how they are embracing the medium of glass in new and exciting ways, pushing the boundaries of techniques and challenging the perception of glass as merely a material for creating functional objects.

Featuring a selection of fifteen works, Art of Glass reveals a snapshot of glass art today, made by fifteen artists including Matt Durran, Harry Morgan and Emma Woffenden.

MUSIC. Edinburgh Blues and Rock Festival, Corn Exchange

The Edinburgh Blues and Rock Festival is all about getting the local, national and international performers together for a day of music at The Edinburgh Corn Exchange.

The festival has more than 100 different rums as well as cocktails, food and music from around the globe.

Throughout the event there will be live entertainment and dancing and talks from rum industry experts.

Saturday 29, September

The Festival of The Dead party has resurfaced with a new hoard of characters and creations.

Expect live music, professional skull face painting and a light show.

A 15ft tall vulture will roam the crowd, plus giant skulls and skeletons, circus acts and carnival processions.

It is a contemporary event for over 18’s, infusing elements carnival, circus, theatre and partying.

ART. Rembrandt: Britain’s Discovery of the Master, Scottish National Gallery
Now – Sunday 14, October

This exhibition showcases major works by the Dutch Master alongside those of the many British artists he inspired, such as William Hogarth, Joshua Reynolds, Henry Raeburn, David Wilkie, Jacob Epstein, John Bellany, and Frank Auerbach.

Highlights of the show include key paintings by Rembrandt drawn from British collections, such as Belshazzar’s Feast from the National Gallery in London and Girl at the Window from Dulwich Picture Gallery. It includes star paintings now overseas, such as The Mill from the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.

EXHIBITION. Rip It Up: The Story of Scottish Pop, National Museum of Scotland
Now – Sunday, 25 November

A musical journey of Scottish pop music from the 1950’s to the present day.

Artists and bands featured include Lonnie Donegan, Gerry Rafferty, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Lulu, The Rezillos, Midge Ure, Simple Minds, The Skids, Big Country, Garbage, Franz Ferdinand, Young Fathers, and many more.

The exhibition includes original stage outfits and instruments, many loaned by the artists themselves, plus memorabilia, props, film and, of course, music.

EXHIBITION. Planes, trains and automobiles, National Portrait Gallery
Now – Sunday 13, January.

The exhibition looks at the variety of modes of transport used around the world from the 1840s onwards. It is a global look at travel, from pedal power to commercial airliners, via cars, horse-drawn carriages, sleighs, buses, and the occasional camel!

Through work by the likes of Alfred G Buckham, Humphrey Spender and Alfred Stieglitz it examines how photography has been used to chart the technological innovations created by the desire to travel and the impact that transportation has on society. The exhibition shows how transport is part of our everyday lives, from the daily grind of commuting to the pleasure of holidays away.
