Visitors share their enjoyment of Edinburgh Meadows Festival

THOUSANDS of guests attended the first day of a community-led festival at Edinburgh’s Meadows Park.

The event - within the capital’s University quarter - was filled with groups who enjoyed musical entertainment and market stalls at the Meadows Festival.

There were lots of family-friendly activities and live performances by local bands.

Visitor, Owen Mitchell, from Manchester stumbled upon the festival during his visit to the city with friends.

The 24-year-old accountant said: “It’s been pleasant sitting out on the grass in the sunshine. There’s a good variety of things going on. We might try some archery – I’ve always wanted to try it.”

Food vendors and beer tents offered a selection of refreshments, and stalls sold objects such as antiques, clothing craft and fairtrade products.

An East Lothian housewife, Kerry Harris, 49, attended with her family. She said: “We come along every year – it’s always one for the diary.

"We were worried that less people would attend because of the attack in Manchester. But there is a good crowd and it’s great to see that people are just getting on with it.”

Many guests brought their dogs along too and the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home provided games for them.

They ran a competition called ‘Temptation Alley’ where the dogs had to reach their owners on the other side of a path lined with treats and toys.

The Home’s main show will run tomorrow (Sunday, June 4) during the second day of the festival.

They will award prizes for pooches with the waggiest tails and cutest male and female dogs, as well as one for the dog who most resembles its owner.

The shows take place in front of the Banshee Labyrinth music stage where a line-up of bands cater for a wide range music tastes.
